Another case solved by the lab. Celebrate Lab Week 2025.

April 15, 2025

Medical laboratory professionals play a vital role in solving medical cases every day. Their expertise and precision ensure that patients receive timely and accurate diagnoses, leading to more effective treatments and better health outcomes. In essence, medical laboratory professionals are the unsung heroes behind the scenes, working diligently to support the healthcare system and improve patient lives.

Investigate the latest advancements in lab science that empower medical laboratory science (MLS) detectives to solve cases more efficiently and effectively. The following podcast episode, articles, and educational resources provide valuable insights into diagnostic puzzles:

  1. LabMind: A podcast that explores the future of laboratory medicine

An Interview With Amanda Openshaw: The Laboratory Is a Mystery Machine of Diagnostics

Every specimen represents a potential mystery, and laboratory professionals often play the role of detectives. Amanda Openshaw, MS, LCGC, a genetic counselor with ARUP’s Cytogenetics department, shares examples illustrating the importance of good investigative work in the laboratory to discover accurate diagnoses.

  2. Fully integrating public health services and clinical laboratory testing

ARUP Offers New Assay To Detect Influenza A (H5) Virus

Through collaboration with the CDC, ARUP has created an assay that will enhance the capacity to detect highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A virus, also known as H5N1 or bird flu. ARUP will continue to closely monitor this outbreak of influenza A (H5) as it evolves and will proactively address any new developments.

  3. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI)-augmented processes enable increased sensitivity and diagnostic yield

ARUP Laboratories Expands AI-Augmented Parasitology Screening Tool, Improves Detection and Diagnosis

Traditional microscopy for gastrointestinal parasite detection is manual, time-consuming, and stressful for laboratory staff, requiring extensive training and experience. The AI-augmented screening tool uses scanned images to eliminate negative specimens, allowing staff to focus on identifying positive ones. This tool reduces ergonomic stress on lab staff, decreases turnaround time, increases capacity, and improves patient care.

  4. Magnify Magazine: The Art and Science of Diagnostic Medicine

    Magnify Fall 2024

This edition of Magnify contains a patient’s journey of rare disease diagnosis with help from ARUP’s autoimmune disease testing and a piece on ARUP’s innovative myeloid malignancy mutation panel, the first to combine both a targeted gene approach and genomewide analysis in a single assay.

  5. Continuing education video lectures from ARUP’s experts

ARUP’s medical directors, who are also faculty members at the University of Utah School of Medicine, create video lectures for continuing education credits. They offer insight, in-depth analysis, and practical knowledge on relevant and emerging topics in laboratory medicine.

Here are some of our recent and most popular video lectures:
