David Shiembob, MBA, C(ASCP)CM, manager of ARUP Healthcare Advisory Services, has received the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Achievement Award from the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (ADLM).
David Shiembob, MBA, C(ASCP)CM, manager of ARUP Healthcare Advisory Services, has been honored with the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Achievement Award from the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (ADLM, formerly the American Association for Clinical Chemistry [AACC]). The award recognizes clinical laboratory scientist (CLS) professionals who have made significant contributions to the CLS community, their respective institutions, and the field of laboratory medicine.
“I’m really grateful to ADLM and those who nominated me for this award,” Shiembob said. “I appreciate the acknowledgment that the work I’ve done in my career, both on the technical side and on the consulting side, is something that merits this recognition. We always approach our consulting projects as laboratorians because we understand the needs of the lab and how important the lab is.”
Shiembob began working at ARUP as a technologist trainee after graduating from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Although he’d spent time working in research laboratories at the U, he was drawn to clinical laboratory science.
“I’d realized by the end of my undergrad that research wasn’t for me. Working in a research lab was a great experience, but I found there’s a lot of dead ends, and things often don’t pan out the way you want them to,” he said. “Something that appealed to me about the clinical lab was that it was still a lab—it was science-focused, and we were doing some of the same work that I found engaging in the research lab. But I went home every day knowing I’d accomplished something. I’d completed hundreds of patient tests, and that was something I didn’t get from the research lab.”
After 10 years of various technical and management roles in ARUP’s chemistry laboratories, Shiembob earned his MBA and transferred to work for ARUP Healthcare Advisory Services. With this group, he helps clients elevate their laboratory stewardship programs, expand outreach operations, implement data analytics solutions, and tackle the challenges unique to their systems.
“I enjoy helping our clients accomplish something they might not have been able to achieve without our help, whether that’s justifying resources, developing a space utilization plan, or helping fine-tune their lab stewardship committee and giving them the tools and advice they need to actually make that work,” Shiembob said.
“I am pleased that Dave is being recognized for his significant contributions to the clinical lab industry,” said Sandy Richman, MBA, C(ASCP), director of ARUP Healthcare Advisory Services. “He made an immediate impact upon joining the Healthcare Advisory Services team seven years ago. His knowledge and passion for lab medicine have enhanced our offerings, benefiting the multiple hospitals and health systems we partner with. His involvement and leadership positions within ADLM, combined with his multiple speaking engagements and articles, have raised the profile of our team. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.”
Shiembob has served in several volunteer roles with the ADLM. He previously chaired the ADLM Clinical Laboratory Scientists Council and served on the ADLM board of directors in an ex-officio capacity as part of that role. He’s currently serving on the organization’s Finance Committee and its Society for Young Clinical Laboratorians Core Committee.
“I can't say enough good things about the time I’ve spent volunteering with ADLM,” he said. “I’m able to work with people from all over the country, and I’ve gained a greater understanding of the needs of different specialties within the CLS community.”
