ARUP Laboratories’ LabMind podcast is entering a new chapter. After nearly seven years and close to 100 episodes, founding host Brian Jackson, MD, MS, has passed the microphone to Jonathan Genzen, MD, PhD, MBA, ARUP chief medical officer and senior director of governmental affairs, clinical professor in the University of Utah’s Department of Pathology. Genzen brings a leading voice to LabMind while honoring the podcast’s legacy of thought-provoking conversations about laboratory medicine, healthcare policy, and patient care.

“I’m honored to be stepping into the role of LabMind host,” Genzen said in his debut episode, released on November 17, 2025. “I look forward to exploring the clinical lab world with you in future episodes.”

For his first episode as host, Genzen interviewed Brian Jackson, MD, MS, who hosted LabMind for years, and the two reminisced about past episodes and their time working together at ARUP.

LabMind launched in 2018 with the goal of connecting laboratory professionals, clinicians, and healthcare leaders through candid conversations. In Jackson’s farewell episode, he reflected on the podcast’s evolution.

“I had no idea what this would turn into, but it’s gone beyond my expectations because there are so many interesting and brilliant people to interview,” Jackson said. He also reminisced about memorable episodes, including one about ARUP’s origin story featuring retired CEO Carl Kjeldsberg, MD, and one about laboratorians who persevered and continued to provide lab services despite devastating wildfires in California.

Genzen has appeared in past episodes on regulatory policies and laboratory operations. As host, he plans to continue exploring the intersection of diagnostics, clinical care, and innovation. His leadership experience and background in clinical pathology, automation, and quality improvement position him to guide the conversations that matter to laboratorians and healthcare professionals.

“Brian’s shaped this podcast from the beginning, and it’s a privilege to carry that forward,” Genzen said.

Upcoming episodes will feature discussions on laboratory quality, emerging technologies, and the evolving role of labs in healthcare decision-making. Genzen also plans to spotlight the contributions of medical laboratory scientists and continue LabMind’s mission of sharing personal anecdotes and creative insights into the challenges and opportunities facing laboratories and clinicians.
