Adam Barker, PhD, has been named ARUP’s first chief scientific officer. He moves into the role after having spent four years as director of Research and Development.
Adam Barker, PhD, has been appointed as ARUP’s chief scientific officer, a role in which he will lead the newly formed New Technologies Group.
CEO Andy Theurer said Barker’s new title recognizes his many contributions as director of the ARUP Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology (Research and Development, or R&D) and as the head of ARUP’s Reagent Lab. Barker’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic was key to enabling ARUP to quickly build capacity to meet demand for diagnostic testing. The efforts of the Reagent Lab teams he led also were essential in addressing a global shortage of kits necessary to collect specimens for COVID-19 testing.
As ARUP’s first chief scientific officer, Barker will establish and lead the New Technologies Group to create partnerships that keep ARUP on the cutting edge of laboratory medicine.
“Dr. Barker is skilled at evaluating opportunities and nurturing relationships that enable ARUP to be among the first to test and validate new technologies,” Theurer said. “This new group and new role will enable him to be even more proactive in expanding essential relationships.”
Barker joined ARUP in 2010 as a fellow in Microbiology. He went on to become a medical director before being named associate director of R&D and later, director of R&D, a position he had held since 2017.
Barker welcomes the new role. “This is a great opportunity that will enable us to pursue exciting new initiatives, and to ensure that these new initiatives are well integrated with R&D at ARUP,” he said.
